What is Hydroponics?
Hydroponics revolutionizes the way we grow plants, offering a modern, efficient and space-saving solution for cultivating fresh produce year-round.
Hydroponics is a soilless growing method where plants receive essential nutrients directly from water, with a clever design that maintains a steady flow of nourishment. Its space-efficient structure supports a diverse range of plants, from herbs to fruits & vegetables, all while conserving water and reducing waste. This modern approach accelerates plant growth, increases yields and makes year-round cultivation possible, even in urban settings.

The Hydroponic tower
A compact, self-sustaining tower that grows 24 plants year-round with ease and durability.
Our Hydroponic Tower is a vertical system designed for effortless cultivation, both indoors and outdoors. It optimizes growing space while providing a hassle-free way to nurture a variety of plants. Whether you’re growing fresh herbs at home or scaling up for commercial production, this low-maintenance solution enables consistent, high-quality harvests throughout the year.
wHat sets our tower apart?
Hydroponic systems are exposed to water, sunlight, temperature changes and regular handling — so durability isn’t optional, it’s essential. Our tower is built with that in mind, using materials and methods that ensure it holds up season after season without cracking, warping or breaking down.
Most hydroponic towers on the market are made from thin, brittle plastic using low-cost injection molding. These materials often weaken over time, especially with UV exposure and repeated use. Our tower, on the other hand, is manufactured using rotational molding, a process that creates thick, high-density polyethylene walls with uniform strength throughout. It’s impact-resistant, UV-stable and made to handle both indoor and outdoor conditions with ease. Unlike cheaper alternatives, this is a system you invest in once — and rely on for many growing seasons to come.
Simplicity is one of the core strengths of our hydroponic tower. The entire system is housed within the tower itself — including the water reservoir and circulation pump — eliminating the need for any external pipes, wall-mounted tanks or complicated plumbing. The sturdy reservoir base includes a removable lid secured with easy-to-use thumb screws, making internal cleaning and maintenance simple. A separate filling cap and ring allow quick top-ups of nutrient-rich water without disassembling the tower.
The submersible pump quietly pushes water to the top, where it trickles down through each level via gravity. The internal flow design keeps everything clean and compact, making setup fast and maintenance minimal. Whether you’re placing the tower on a balcony, patio or small garden, there’s no need to drill, plumb or modify anything — just fill, plug in and grow. The tower segments fits securely into this base lid, locking into place with a robust, interlocking design — ensuring both stability and seamless function from the ground up.
The UV-stabilized plastic used in our hydroponic tower plays a key role in maintaining a healthier growing environment. By limiting excess light penetration into the internal segments, it helps prevent algae buildup around the roots — which can disrupt water flow, nutrient uptake and overall plant health. This means cleaner water, healthier roots and more reliable growth throughout the year.
At the same time, the material itself is built for durability in the harshest sunlight. Our tower resists cracking, fading and brittleness caused by long-term UV exposure, making it ideal for rooftop gardens, patios and backyards across South Africa’s varied climates. With proper care, it stays strong and good-looking — season after season.
Each tower is built from thick-walled, interlocking planter segments that stack securely without the need for extra screws, rods or tools. The base of each segment is designed with a guide slot, while the top of the segment below fits snugly into place — creating a stable, self-aligning column.
This tool-free design makes the tower incredibly user-friendly and fast to assemble. The added thickness of the molded plastic also contributes to overall rigidity, making the full structure more solid and stable even when stacked tall. Whether you’re adjusting the height, expanding your grow setup, or breaking it down for transport or storage, it’s as simple as stacking or unstacking — no fuss, no frustration.
Our hydroponic tower is designed with accessibility in mind — using standard, widely available components throughout. From the net pots and rockwool to the internal fittings like the pump and tubing, everything fits commonly used sizes. That means no searching for rare replacements or being tied to a specific brand.
Each planter slot is molded to perfectly accommodate industry-standard net pots, so you can easily swap, replace, or expand your setup with parts available at most garden or hydroponic suppliers. It’s a system that grows with you — without complications or added costs.

What is the tower made from?
The tower is made from rotationally molded, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) — a durable and impact-resistant plastic. Unlike thin, injection-molded alternatives, this construction results in thicker walls that can withstand outdoor conditions, strong winds and daily use without cracking or degrading.
It’s also UV-stabilized, meaning it’s specifically designed to handle South Africa’s intense sun exposure without becoming brittle, discoloured, or warped over time. The result is a long-lasting, weather-resistant tower that performs consistently season after season.
How many plants can I grow?
The standard Atlasplastics Hydroponic Tower comes with 4 segments and can grow 24 plants at a time, year-round. Thanks to the continuous growing environment, many leafy greens and herbs can be harvested multiple times, depending on the crop — offering a steady supply of fresh produce from a single planting.
For larger-scale or commercial setups, the tower is also expandable. We offer an 8-segment model that supports up to 48 plants — ideal for small farms, restaurants or serious growers.

What is the electric consumption of a tower?
Each Atlasplastics Hydroponic Tower uses a low-wattage submersible pump that is both energy-efficient and reliable. With the included timer, the pump is programmed to run for 5 minutes every 20 minutes, on a continuous cycle. This means it’s only active for about 6 hours total per day, drastically reducing electricity use.
On average, the system consumes around 10 to 15 watts during operation. Thanks to the efficient timing cycle, this adds up to less than R20–R30 per month in electricity costs, depending on your local rates — less than a typical household lightbulb.
The timer helps strike a balance between plant hydration and energy savings, making the system cost-effective for long-term, everyday use.
What is the crop yield of a Hydroponic Tower? (And what crops are best for commercial growing?)
Atlasplastics hydroponic towers are optimized for high-yield, year-round production of leafy greens and herbs, especially when operated in climate-controlled environments or sunny outdoor setups. Each standard tower holds 24 plants, while our commercial model holds up to 48 plants in an 8-segment configuration.
These towers are ideal for crops that remain compact within the system’s vertical footprint — such as:
- Lettuce (butterhead, romaine, oakleaf)
- Spinach
- Rocket (arugula)
- Kale
- Basil
- Coriander (cilantro)
- Parsley
- Mint
- Thyme & oregano
Crops like tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and cucumbers can be grown, but are less space-efficient due to their need for structural support outside the tower’s footprint. For maximum yield per square meter, we recommend focusing on leafy greens and herbs.
Expected Yields (per 24-port tower):
Lettuce & greens: 100g–175g per plant every 21–28 days
Herbs: 80g–150g per plant per harvest (varies by type and cycle)
Harvest cycles: Most greens can be harvested every 3–4 weeks, with some herbs offering multiple cuttings from the same plant
Annual cycles: You can grow and harvest 8–12 crops per year per port, depending on your climate and crop type
That means a 24-plant tower can yield between 2.4kg and 4.2kg per cycle, or 20–40+ kg annually, depending on crop and conditions.
Scalable for Commercial Farming
Looking to farm commercially? Our 8-segment commercial tower holds 48 plants and is designed for robust, year-round productivity — while still using standard-sized pots and materials that are easily replaced without relying on proprietary parts.
